1st Reef Check Ocean Festival Held in Malibu
Santa Ana winds weren?t strong enough to keep anyone away from the Reef Check Ocean Festival and ?Surf?s Up? screening, held October 6 at Malibu Bluffs Park. The event hosted a variety of activities for children and adults alike, including special appearances by Cody the penguin, starfish, sharks, and even a komodo dragon!

Reef Check Teams in Action
Chicago City Day School students do Reef Check in the Bahamas
For the past five years, students from the Chicago City Day School (CCDS) have participated in an expedition culminating in a Reef Check Survey at the Bimini Islands in the Bahamas.  This summer, two teams of dedicated middle school students from CCDS conducted separate Reef Check surveys of Turtle Rocks, a shallow reef in Bimini. 

KPMG Gets Reef Check Certified in Malaysia

In August, KPMG, a leading audit, tax and advisory firm in Malaysia, held its second Charity Run event. This year, KPMG campaigned for greater awareness and support of reef conservation in Malaysia, and as such decided to donate net proceeds to Reef Check Malaysia.

Reef Check Dominican Republic On National Geographic?s Wild Chronicles
Reef Check Dominican Republic will be featured in an upcoming episode of National Geographic’s television show, Wild Chronicles. The episode is scheduled to appear in the United States on PBS in December. Check your local listings for specific dates and times.

RCDR Holds Successful Reef Rhythms Fundraiser
Reef Rhythms were heard at the Hard Rock Cafe Santo Domingo on October 25th, where Reef Check Dominican Republic held their annual fundraising event. This event was a continuation of RCDR's mission to protect coastal marine resources in the Dominican Republic, and the objective this time was to raise funds to support the management and protection of La Caleta Marine Protected Area, for which RCDR recently obtained co-management rights.

Yacht Aid Delivers Reef Check Adventures Book to Kids in Panama
Yacht Aid Global, a charity based in Encinitas, California, recently made a delivery to Isla Nalunega in the San Blas Islands of Panama. Motor Yacht DESTINY was provided with school supplies and dozens of copies of the kids booklet “Aventuras Reef Check”. The Owner, Captain and crew hand delivered the goods in mid August to the islanders.

Reef Check Philippines Hosts 1st Cebu Underwater Photography Contest and Event Party
Reef Check Philippines, together with numerous partners, is organizing the 1st Cebu Underwater Photography Contest and Event Party on Nov. 10 in the Nalusuan Island Resort Marine Sanctuary and Scubaworld Cebu in Punta Engano, Mactan, Cebu. The event is an initiative to highlight Cebu’s underwater beauty and to promote underwater photography- related tourism.   For inquiries and ticket reservation, please call 2-813-1308 / 893-7252.


Reef Check Pulau Weh, Sumatra EcoExpedition – April 7-17, 2008
Reef Check will be leading a new EcoExpedition to the amazing island of Pulau Weh at the northern tip of Sumatra, Indonesia. Join Reef Check scientist Kim Obermeyer and local coral reef conservationists from Pulau Weh to survey and monitor coral reefs in this world-class Marine Protected Area.

11th International Coral Reef Symposium
Every four years the International Coral Reef Symposium (ICRS) convenes as a major scientific conference to provide the latest knowledge about coral reefs worldwide. The United States will host the 11th International Coral Reef Symposium from July 7-11, 2008 in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. The deadline for abstract submission is December 15, 2007.
