Coral Reefs Now More Resistant to Ocean Warming than a Decade Ago

A new study published in the journal Nature Communications uses 20 years of Reef Check data to show that corals now can withstand higher temperatures before bleaching than they could a decade ago. Your data at work!

The team at Reef Check France collected this recent footage of coral bleaching from the island of Réunion, as part of their long term monitoring efforts. The team reports that this year’s bleaching is similar in magnitude to the bleaching events of 2016.

Congratulations to our new Reef Check team in Costa Rica! Dive instructors at Oceans Unlimited and Go Pro Costa Rica joined Reef Check Trainer Cristina Sánchez for a 3-day EcoDiver training. The team will use their survey data to track the progress of their reef restoration efforts.


New EcoDivers to Assist Egyptian Authorities in Monitoring Red Sea Reefs

Congratulations to the i-Dive Tribe divers on their Reef Check certification! These divers volunteer to help conserve the Red Sea’s coral reefs, and with their Reef Check EcoDiver certification, they are now ready to assist rangers from the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency with monitoring reefs all around the Egyptian Red Sea.
