Reef Check Receives Grant for Kelp Forest Restoration Efforts in Northern California

On February 26th, Reef Check was awarded a $500,000 grant from the California Ocean Protection Council to begin kelp forest restoration efforts in Mendocino County. In collaboration with commercial fishermen and recreational divers, Reef Check aims to remove urchins from targeted locations with the goal of providing opportunities for kelp forests to regrow where they once were abundant.

Reef Check’s Role in the California Marine Life Protection Act and Engaging the Public to Monitor Reefs Statewide

Where the Pacific Ocean meets the coast of California is one of the most diverse and productive ecosystems in the world. In 1999, California passed the Marine Life Protection Act, requiring the state to implement a network of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). Reef Check monitors sites inside and outside MPAs to provide critical scientific data to better understand the effectiveness of the MPA Network, while also allowing the MPA monitoring program to develop a local presence by educating the public through experience.
