Reef Check California July Update

By Reef Check California Director of Science Cyndi Dawson

The final stretch of the survey season has begun and RCCA Divers are conducting surveys from Crescent City to San Diego over the next few months!! July brought to a close the training season with a total of 12 completed trainings. We trained 115 new RCCA divers statewide! With the exponential growth in the RCCA Program from 2007 to 2008, we are adding more sites to our ever-expanding monitoring network.   This expansion will include more than 60 sites this year, an increase of over 20% in the number of sites being monitored. Currently there are well over 300 divers who have been trained as RCCA Divers since 2006 as we continue to engage Californias in actively improving marine management.

Reef Check California staff also recently returned from a great training trip in Baja California. There, we are partnering with the Mexican NGO, Comunidad y Biodiversidad (COBI), and local fisherman on a marine reserve monitoring project. Check out more details here.
