The RC indicators were chosen based on several criteria including that they are geographically widespread and economically valuable i.e. a target for human predation. Therefore, the indicators are useful locally, regionally and globally. In addition, each team leader is encouraged to add indicators that are locally important. This allows each local team to use the standard RC protocol but to gather information on indicators that are particularly important locally. For example, most islanders in the Caribbean do not know that sea cucumbers are collected and exported to Asia from e.g. Cuba. Most Caribbean islanders would consider it a waste of time to monitor sea cucumbers, but not in Cuba.
